Reviewof Sonic 4: Episode Metal

Episode Metal is a free bonus included with Episode 2, provided you bought Episode 1 back in the day on the same device. So this review will decide why you should (or shouldn’t) get both.

Sound: The music is primarily the music of zones from Ep. 1, tunes which weren’t superb. On the other hand, there is an amazing albiet brief remix of “Toot Toot Sonic Warrior” and “Sonic Boom” played during a cutscene which is undeniably amazing. Sound: 7/10

Presentation: Episode Metal retains Ep. 1’s graphical style, sadly. Characters are over-glossified and the textures resemble the properties of a bubble. Another issue with the presentation is the order of events in this game, because if Ep. 1 doesn’t happen directly after S3&K then the entire plot of Sonic Heroes is illegitimized. On the bright side, Metal Sonic looks cool no matter what kind of graphical style he’s in and the multitude of cutscenes are great regardless of possible plotholes. Presentation: 8/10

Gameplay: The gameplay is almost identical to Sonic’s from Ep. 1, with the exception that Metal jumps a little lower and moves a little slower. To counter this, the levels have an intense focus on precision platforming and take existing levels from Ep. 1 while adding many new deathtraps and a few new areas. While I like the whole “hard mode” aspect, I would’ve prefered entirely new stages instead of revised levels from zones. Even with that minor fault, playing as Metal Sonic is awesome, especially considering it’s one of the last times we’ll be playing as anyone other than Sonic for a while (directly paraphrased from SEGA). Gameplay: 7.5/10

Multiplayer: N/A

Length: Episode Metal is fairly short, with only four acts and a few scattered cutscenes. What makes up for this lack of length is that it’s an entirely free episode and that playing as Metal Sonic in hard remakes of levels is really fun. Length: 7/10

Overall: Is Episode Metal worth buying the other two Sonic 4 installments for? With a 7.4 out of 10, definitely. It’s a nice diversion from the main games and an outstanding reason to buy both.
